We have two teething babies.

Two.

Teething.

Babies.

Argh. Althea chomps on her lips and hums really hard and loud. “Mmmmm. MMMMMMMMMMM!” She grabs plastic toys and rubs the hell out of her gums as hard as she can to the point that it makes an audible squeaking sound. I’ve been watching the progress over the past week or so, her gums going from some swelling, to a hint of two white caps under the skin, to the tiny peak of a white tooth starting to poke through the gums today. I rubbed some Baby Orajel on it. She furrowed her brow and gave me a look that said, simply, “WTF?”

Elise isn’t quite in the heat of it like Althea is, but her swollen gums and crankiness tell me she’s just a few days behind her sister.

Just to complicate things, Althea has decided to work on her mobility at the same time. This afternoon, I found her awake from her nap in the crib, leaning on her forearms with both of her knees bent underneath her. Her ability to pivot, roll and, soon, crawl makes our lack of space ever-more evident. It’s only a matter of time before I have the girls caged up.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, they are NOT having rice cereal. If they could talk, they’d say, “Look Ama, you’ve been feeding us the good stuff for six months and you’re trying to pull this bland goopy shit on us? Uh uh. Give us the sweet potatoes, the bananas, the apples. Quit holding out on us! And yes, the sweet tooth is ALL YOUR FAULT. And yes, we are able to construct complex thoughts and sentences this early because we are freaking GENIUSES. Now, give us some more fish oil.”

I’m right there with ya woman. I have no doubt that two teething babies is some sort of insane punishment for something I did in my past. Poor little darlings. It breaks my heart to not be able to do anything for them, but wow five minutes of quiet would be nice!

We only did rice for a week as well. Try oatmeal. Its much more less gross in my opinion and my guys like it waaay better! Although they also prefer peas to carrots or sweet potatoes so I guess they are just weird! Good luck!

TEETH! That means real food soon! Woo Hoo! I’m soo feeding them french fries!!!! I love the rocking. It’s soo cute!!!

As for rice cereal, Rook didn’t like it either until my sissy mixed it with her breast milk. Then she ate it better. (Apparently, it tastes absolutely awful with just water, according to Bobbi). When she was able to eat the other stuff, she would mix a little rice cereal in it, too.

I had to do peaches in the cereal before S would take it. We made homemade food for the most part and it was surprisingly easy (and kind of fun?)

I think MJ is teething too. He’s psychotic and ferocious and spent 2 hours yesterday squalling about NOTHING.

Hyland’s Teething Tablets really work. I never did Orajel, it freaks me out.

Rice cereal is gross…ever try it?

Mere wouldn’t eat it either, so we went on to carrots, and soon greenbeans and other veggies.

I’m not surprised she was weirded out about the Orajel…ever try it? I did before couple years ago just to see what it did, put a small bit on my inside cheek and it made every part of my mouth and part of my throat numb….and it only lasted a couple minutes. Try it, it’s weird!

Hi there, I have been following your blog for some time, but never posted. I too have twin boys, they are about 1 year ahead of your little ones. It is so fun to read your posts and remember where we were a year ago. Anyways, about the food. My boys first food other than bm was bananas; they loved it. I also did avocado and sweet potatoes. I did eventually mix the fruits with rice or more often oatmeal, but they never really took to the cereals. They also did not really eat enough “real” food to sub for the bm until they were 8/9 months old. Keep enjoying your girls. I really enjoy your blog!!! You are doing a great job mama!!!

Piper is teething too! HUGE white lumps on her TOP gums (yep, top teeth!), unbearable cranky attitude, and you described that mmmmm sound perfectly. I just want those suckers to pop through so we can be done with it. I’ve heard the first two are the worst, and it gets easier. I can’t imagine two going through it. You deserve a medal. Or at least a margarita.
