My 2-week old girls asleep
I have the girls hanging out in the living room today in their bassinet. Well, “hanging out” might be a bit of an overstatement. “Sleeping” is more like it. Sleeping. Again.
I was never a baby-crazy type, so I haven’t spent much time with small babies. I wasn’t expecting them to emerge with a hankering for a game of Scattergories or anything, but I didn’t realize that newborns slept this much.
Normal? The pediatrician says so. The books say so. But my newfound motherly inclination worries.
Of course, they do have their moments. Last night, for example, Elise got some wicked gas and an irritated butt, causing her to burst into her signature tomato-faced scream from about 8pm – 1:30am. Fun fun fun!
Althea is generally more mellow, but Chris and I have identified when she’s going to get out of control. She gets a wild, bush-baby look in her big, googly eyes and follows up with a series of loud “AAAHHHHHHHHH!”s. Just that single syllable, yelled over and over again: “AHHHHHHH!” This is the same look she gets when we know she’s just not going to go to sleep.
Other developments:
- The girls had their first real bath yesterday
- They are both practicing grins more often. Not in recognition of anything, but both babies are smiling more often. I can’t wait for them to burst into a grin on purpose.
- Both of the girls have big-girl belly buttons now

Max got his big boy bellybutton yesterday and his first bath this morning. He gave it two thumbs down.
The girls are SO CUTE. They already look so big! I think they look a lot like you.
It kind of looks like they’re “raising the roof” while they sleep. Perhaps you should inform them that that song is, like, so two years ago.
Aside from their terrible taste in music, they are quite lovely

When they do that, you do that too. M’kay? They are going to come alive and go bonkers any day now. I felt like the first two weeks all mine did was sleep. Then about three weeks, the party began. Sleep now. Just do it. ‘Cause I said so. SHH!
